Call for Entries from State Artists for “Illinois at 200” Exhibit
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Giertz Gallery at Parkland College, in collaboration with 40 North: Champaign County Arts Council, is seeking entries for “Illinois at 200,” a juried exhibition that will feature the work of contemporary Illinois artists.
Scheduled to coincide with the commemoration of the 200th birthday of Illinois, the exhibition aims to highlight the achievements of artists currently working in our state.
The online submission process is open to all artists 18 years and older residing in Illinois. All work must be original, completed since January 2014, and not previously exhibited at the Giertz Gallery. While the exhibition has been planned to celebrate the Illinois bicentennial, submitted works do not need to use the state of Illinois or its 200th birthday as a theme.
Doug Stapleton, associate curator of art with the Illinois State Museum, will jury the exhibition. A former faculty member at Columbia College Chicago, Stapleton has organized more than 20 exhibitions for the museum and has written numerous essays for exhibition catalogs related to the work of Illinois artists.
Illinois at 200 will be on exhibit from Monday, June 18 to Wednesday, Aug. 8. Lisa Costello, director of the Giertz Gallery, and Kelly White, director of 40 North: Champaign County Arts Council, will give opening remarks at 6:30 p.m. during an artist reception on Thursday, June 21. There will also be a closing reception on Wednesday, Aug. 8 that will feature a gallery talk by Stapleton at 6:30 p.m.
The deadline to submit work to be considered for the exhibition is May 14, 2018.
