Soon, in addition to books, you will be able to “check out” seeds for your garden at the Urbana Free Library. How will that work exactly?
- Pick out and bring home seeds to plant.
- Grow your plants.
- Let some go to seed.
- Bring some of those seeds back to the library so others can use them.
Currently the library is in the seed collecting phase of things, and are looking for donations. They are starting small, with tomatoes, herbs, peas, beans, peppers, and lettuces. You can bring your seeds (enough to grow at least five plants) to the Circulation Desk.
The plan is to have the seed library ready to go in the spring, and you do not need to have a library card to participate in any part of the process.
Those with questions or ideas on how to develop this new endeavor can contact reference@urbanafree.org with the subject Seed Lending Library.
