There are so many cool things about this call that it’s hard to know where to start. But let’s begin with a definition. Ekphrastic poetry, based on the word ekphrasis, or, the careful description of art, “has since come to embrace a diverse, wild, thrilling departure from mere description,” according to poet and contest judge Eduardo C. Corral. And, the subject which has been chosen is none other than the work of Hal Fisher, “a gay conceptual photographer and an alumnus of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.” whose retrospective exhibition Hal Fischer Photographs: Seriality, Sexuality, Semiotics, will open at Krannert Art Museum this August.
This call takes the notion of interdisciplinary dialogue to a new expressive and experimental level. So, if you’re a poet who loves art in general, and/or queer photography specifically, you’ll definitely want to jump on this chance to explore Fisher’s work and let it inspire your own ekphrastic poetic experience.
Submissions are due by June 30th. Find out more here.
