The Overture: August 28–September 3

WHAT: Shadows on a River, Vivian McConnell, Isaac Arms

WHERE: The Clark Bar (free)

WHEN: Tuesday, August 28th at 7 p.m.

Full band appearances are becoming more of a regular occurrence at the Clark Bar’s singer-songwriter shows. Cody took a look at his newest record not too long ago as well, which is some pretty solid stuff if you’re into indie music. Grandkids’/Santah’s Vivian McConnell and multi-project man Isaac Arms join in this week.

WHAT: Great Deceivers, Short Stories About Their Distance, Nature Vs. No One

WHERE: Red Herring ($3)

WHEN: Tuesday, August 28th at 10 p.m.

Florida indie rock chums Great Deceivers stop through at Red Herring this week as they are nearing the end of a pretty lengthy tour around the states. A couple of other indie/punk outfits join the bill at the always awesome Red Herring venue.

WHAT: Jimmy Herring Band, Brainchild, Herbert Wiser Band

WHERE: Canopy Club ($15)

WHEN: Thursday, August 30th at 7:30 p.m.

Jimmy Herring of Widespread Panic fame makes a stop with a full band surrounding him at Canopy on Thursday. WP is a pretty renowned jam band outfit, so we’ll see what comes out of this side-gig he’s got going on here. He’s got a new studio album on the street now called Subject to Change Without Notice, which you can get here.

WHAT: Chris Darby, Ed Anderson, Jeff Arrigo

Handful of singer-songwriters taking over Mike ‘N Molly’s later in the week. Chris Darby is on tour and has a ton of dates ahead of him all across the Midwest and east coast. EDITOR’S PICK: ELECTRIC BITTERS, TERMINUS VICTOR,
LONELY TRAILER, GONZO DIABLO

Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5) — Friday, August 31st at 9 p.m.

Electric Bitters are joined by a pretty stacked lineup to release their new record into the wild this week. Memoirs of a Dysfunctional Relationship is what they’re calling it, and we should have a closer look at what it’s all about later this week.

You can stream one of the new tracks “Memoirs…” below to get a taste, and if that grabs your interest, you should head out to Mike ‘N Molly’s to check it out. I’m sure they will have copies available for purchase, plus they are playing with some other pretty fantastic acts, including the always raucous Terminus Victor, Lonely Trailor, and experimental outfit Gonzo Diablo.

WHAT: Sun Stereo, Curb Service, DJ Tim Williams

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($5)

WHEN: Friday, August 31st at 10 p.m.

Sun Stereo released an album earlier this year and apparently they are prepping something else to put out at the end of the week. This is the first I’ve heard of this, so maybe it’s a newer development. We’ll just have to see what they’ll be putting out. Joining in is Curb Service, Larry Gates’ project, aka DJ Legtwo, and DJ Tim Williams. Should be a pretty awesome show by the looks of it.

WHAT: Davina and the Vagabonds, Stay Gold Boys

WHERE: The Highdive ($10)

WHEN: Saturday, September 1st at 7:30 p.m.

Blues rockers Davina and the Vagabonds are back at Cowboy Monkey after playing there several months back. If you’re into acts like Bonnie Raitt or Amy Winehouse, this might be your ticket for the week. There’s a pretty good horn section in this crew as well, so that’s always a great addition to the mix, especially when we’re talking blues-rock.
