EDITOR’S PICK: LIKE PIONEERS, CANOE CANOE, HUME
Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5) — Friday, October 5th at 10 p.m.
Chicago’s Like Pioneers venture down to this part of the state later this week. They released their new record called Oh, Magic back in May, so listening to those tunes will have you prepped for this show Friday night. You can stream it below or check it out over at their Bandcamp page. Joining them is Canoe Canoe, which played a while back with Santah at Cowboy Monkey, plus Baltimore’s Hume.
Like Pioneers are an indie band at heart, but have a lot of awesome qualities: a mixture of guy-girl vocals in most of the songs, a variety of textures to all the tracks within Oh, Magic, plus hazy guitars and pleasant melodies. Those things plus the other bands playing makes this a standout for this week.

WHAT: Gabe Liebowitz, Megan Johns
WHERE: Memphis on Main ($5)
WHEN: Friday, October 5th at 9:00 p.m.
Gabe Liebowitz of Chicago’s Dastardly will be putting on a solo set with local Megan Johns at Memphis on Main. It hasn’t seemed like there have been many shows like this at Memphis, and with some new management in line, hopefully more concerts will continue to show up every so often at this venue. You can check out Dastardly’s newer release, Ballads in Blue, which is the follow-up to their other release from earlier this year, Bury Me in the Country.

WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($2)
WHEN: Friday, October 5th at 9:00 p.m.
The Deep End is going down at Cowboy Monkey at the end of the week, featuring locals Ricky Wells and Harsh, plus some Chicago/Indy acts to round out the bill. If you’re wanting some bass in your face this week, this is your ticket.

WHAT: Local H, Ambassadors
WHERE: The Highdive ($15)
WHEN: Saturday, October 6th at 7:30 p.m.
Alt-rock vets Local H have a double album on the way gracefully entitled Hallelujah! I’m a Bum. Not really sure how I feel about that, but regardless, it’s happening. These guys are no strangers to C-U, having played here numerous times in past years. If you’re a diehard, it might be interesting to see what new material they’ve been cooking up for this release. You can check out their new-ish video for “Cold Manor” here.

WHAT: Wick-It The Instigator, DJ Solo, Team Bayside High, Positive Vibr8ions, Miss A, Kodama
WHERE: Canopy Club ($10 advance/$12 door)
WHEN: Saturday, October 6th at 8:30 p.m.
The first time I heard of Wick-It the Instigator was a few years back, when one of my friends introduced me to his mash-up of The Black Keys’ Brothers instrumental tracks with Big Boi’s Sir Lucious Leftfoot acapella tracks. Pretty much awesome, and I definitely recommend checking that out here. I’m sure there’s a ton of other material out there, but this is the most noteworthy in my opinion.

WHAT: Jake Simmons & The Little Ghosts, Shadows on a River, Cortlandt Homes
WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5)

Soul-punk Americana crew Jake Simmons & The Little Ghosts hail from Kalamazoo and make their way to Mike ‘N Molly’s this weekend. Locals Shadows on a River and Chicago’s Cortlandt Homes join in on the fun as well.
