WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5)
WHEN: Thursday, October 18th at 8:00 p.m.
Zach Vinson puts together some jangly indie-pop tunes that will be stopping through C-U later this week. He’ll have some good company to join him in that effort with a local group of jangle poppers themselves in An Evening With Your Mother and Year of the Bobcat. We’ll have a closer look at this show when we talk to Vinson later this week. For now, check out his track “Love Is Where” here.

Liz will have a preview of this show ready to go for later this week, so if you’re looking for a better look at these guys, stay tuned and we’ll have it for you.

EDITOR’S PICK: BLITZEN TRAPPER, PSYCHIC TWIN
The Highdive ($15 advance/$18 door) — Thursday, October 18th at 9:30 p.m.
The next installment of our Smile Politely Show Series is coming up this Thursday with a doozy. Folk-rockers Blitzen Trapper make their way through C-U to The Highdive with one of our local favorites Psychic Twin in what should be our biggest single-show of the series so far (outside of Pygmalion and the local showcase back in June). We’re pretty excited for this one.
You might know these guys from what is probably the most noteworthy record of their catalog in 2008’s acclaimed Furr, and they have been pumping out more of the same Americana-infused folk music since that time, as well as some awesome albums prior. Their last record came out last year, entiteld American Goldwing. They have been a Sub Pop Records staple since Furr and have released albums on that label ever since.
We’ll have an interview with the band to preview this show later in the week, plus you should pay attention to our Twitter account and the SPlog for exclusive ticket giveaways. Check out frontman Eric Earley’s rendition of The Band’s classic “Up on Cripple Creek” below.

WHAT: Videotape, Love Toy, Motes
WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5)
WHEN: Friday, October 19th at 10:00 p.m.
Chicago fuzz-space-rock outfit Videotape should fll the space in the upstairs of Mike ‘N Molly’s quite well with their sound on Friday night. They’ll be joined by local blues rockers Love Toy and noise-poppers Motes. Pretty great bill going on as the shows begin to move upstairs at Mike ‘N Molly’s for the winter.

WHAT: Mazes, Fred Thomas, Charles and the Gnarlies
WHERE: Parasol Records (free)
WHEN: Saturday, October 20th at 3:00 p.m.

WHAT: Empty Isle, Hank., The Longhairs
WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5)
WHEN: Saturday, October 20th at 10:00 p.m.
Skuzz rockers out of Chicago Empty Isle headline this Saturday night show at MIke ‘N Molly’s and have a pretty interesting sound. They blend a lot of different types of rock into one lumped full of something between alt-emo and post-punk. It’s hard to put a finger on it, but after listening to their demos they have on Bandcamp from earlier this year, they fit well with this bill in Hank and The Longhairs (side project of The Living Blue).

WHAT: Boilerman, Midstress, Horrible Things, Strong City, Sleepyhead
WHERE: Red Herring ($5)
WHEN: Sunday, October 21st at 9:00 p.m.
A whole slew of punk bands taking over the Red Herring to round out the week entirely on a Sunday night. Boilerman is from Chicago and Midstress and Horrible Things act as the local support, while out of state acts Strong City (of Iowa) and Sleepyhead (Minnesota) join in. Should get rowdy.
