More than a dozen local bands will be playing the Fall Semester showdown at the Canopy Club on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. In case you’re not familiar with some of them, we’ll be running capsule interviews with as many of them as would respond to our emails over the next few days.
Next up: Audiac Arrest, who will be playing on Thursday night as part of a five-band bill also featuring Empyrean Soul, Arkansas Dogjaw, Jet W. Lee, and Kilroy et al. Cover is $7, and the show starts at 10 p.m.
Smile Politely: How would you describe your sound to a person who you don’t think will like your music?
Audiac Arrest: We have no need to describe the music, we would simply let him/her listen. Describing music can be a dangerous task considering all of the generic marketing terms which have little meaning that are used to categorize it (“rock”, “pop”). It gives a general idea, however so little can actually be communicated about the music that it’s just so much easier to let the music do the talking.
Smile Politely: Is there anything your music has been compared to that you don’t particularly agree with?
Audiac Arrest: We are generally indifferent in stance about individual opinions or comparisons made about our music, since it isn’t as relevant for us. There will always be people who dislike and people who like any given thing, and our music is no exception.
Smile Politely: Are there any non-musical influences that one might not expect?
Audiac Arrest: Most of our influences are non-musical. Events outside of music and our personal lives have a huge impact on the resultant music.
Smile Politely: What are the primary factors/influences/motivations that keep you doing what you’re doing?
Audiac Arrest: We are motivated by our dislike for the current popular music trends.
Smile Politely: What is the best (or worst) thing happening in music today (either local, national or international)?
Audiac Arrest: One of the worst things happening in the popular music world are people like Paris Hilton, Ashlee Simpson, Miley Cyrus. Actresses.
Smile Politely: Tell us about the worst show you have ever played.
Audiac Arrest: Naturally, our first show was our worst. From that point forward, each show should get better than the one previous. It was a battle of the bands and mostly we just had some nerves so our presentation wasn’t ideal. That aside, it was a “good” first show.
Smile Politely: What do you have coming up on the horizon?
Audiac Arrest: After this next show, we plan to record a full length CD cataloguing this semester’s work.
Smile Politely: What can people expect from your live show that differs from what is available from your MySpace?
Audiac Arrest: Our myspace displays only two of our first songs, while on Thursday, we will perform 3 new originals, 1 song that isn’t on myspace, the two myspace songs, and a cover of “In Bloom”.
