Fall Semester Showdown profile: Kilroy et. al.

More than a dozen local bands will be playing the Fall Semester showdown at the Canopy Club on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. In case you’re not familiar with some of them, we’ll be running capsule interviews with as many of them as would respond to our emails over the next few days.

Next up: Kilroy et. al., who will be playing on Thursday night as part of a five-band bill also featuring Empyrean Soul, Audiac Arrest, Arkansas Dogjaw, and Jet W. Lee. Cover is $7, and the show starts at 10 p.m.

Smile Politely: How would you describe your sound to a person who you don’t think will like your music?

Kilroy et. al.’s Ed Rice: A mix of many things, ranging from maybe the White Stripes to more pop rock and back to somewhere in between? Meatloaf and Celine Dion-esque tunes here and there, some of everything, I suppose.

Smile Politely: Is there anything your music has been compared to that you don’t particularly agree with?

Kilroy et. al.: As far as I know, comparisons have not been made, so not yet at least.

Smile Politely: Are there any non-musical influences that one might not expect?

Kilroy et. al.: Most of us have a fascination with midgets and Natalie Imbruglia’s eyes…and singing saws in general.

Smile Politely: What are the primary factors/influences/motivations that keep you doing what you’re doing?

Kilroy et. al.: Music and shows are fun to play, that’s pretty much our motivation at the moment.

Smile Politely: What is the best (or worst) thing happening in music today (either local, national or international)?

Kilroy et. al.: Julian Koster of Neutral Milk Hotel on a free Christmas caroling tour. It’s nice to see music that isn’t corrupted with other things once and awhile.

Smile Politely: Tell us about the worst show you have ever played.

Kilroy et. al.: All of our shows have been really fun…we had a weird experience in Lexington, Kentucky last spring where another band got pissed about their friends having to pay and they interrupted the first act to grab their things and storm off…that was interesting, otherwise shows have their ups and downs, especially as we started as a full band, but all are super fun.

Smile Politely: What do you have coming up on the horizon?

Kilroy et. al.: We just got a second guitarist, Mr. Dan Biondi…he’ll be undergoing initiation and what not for awhile. Otherwise, we put on house shows at our house once per month and then plan on playing out as well. I will be working on recording some solo material over the winter…and would like to start recording bands/solo artists starting in the spring.

Smile Politely: What can people expect from your live show that differs from what is available from your MySpace?

Kilroy et. al.: Our myspace is almost totally irrelevant, as it’s more of older solo material of mine…we will be updating it with full band material in the near future.

Here’s a song called “In Time,” that I just did a few weeks ago…Brian will play some saw and Otto will do his thing on bass on Thursday with this tune.
