The Overture: June 3–9

EDITOR’S PICK: ARIEL PINK’S HAUNTED GRAFFITI, PURPLE PILGRIMS
The Highdive ($15) — Monday, June 3rd at 9 p.m.

An early week show makes the Editor’s Pick this week, and for good reason. Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti is in town at the Highdive tonight with touring pals Purple Pilgrims. I said just about everything I had to say in today’s cover story as I had the pleasure of talking to Pink prior to the show. Check that one out and do yourself a favor and get with this show tonight.

DFA Records’ Sinkane is coming through town to share some of their global indie rock grooves with our cities. They’ll be joined by local Prologic Rebel Base Ensamble to add more grooves to the mix. Sinkane released their most recent record, Mars, last year. It’s pretty incredible and highly recommended. Awesome mid-week show at Mike ‘N Molly’s. Check out this video to get started.

Two-piece indie rock crew from St. Louis, Sleepy Kitty, is in town this week and are joined by local folk-pop outfit An Evening With Your Mother (who have been relatively quiet lately) and indie rockers Mille Nomi. Another four band lineup at Error Records, this time on Friday evening. Headlined by Hoax and a few others from around C-U, including local hardcore Need and Laughboy, and Springfield’s Soap Scum. The price of this one is a bit more than their other shows at Error, but you know, these guys gotta eat, so it’s not too much to ask. Kirby will be taking a closer look at this show later this week.

WHERE: Kalyx Center for Sustainability, Monticello ($5)

WHEN: Saturday, June 8th at 4 p.m.

These are always a treat. The last time I was out at the Kalyx Center, it was for the previous Barnstormer featuring White Rabbits, Wildlife, Psychic Twin, and a bunch of others. This establishment is really something. This time, it’ll host the Hogchute Opry, featuring a handful of bands and a bunch of art and activities to go along with the music. Really awesome show.

Local shoegaze outfit Withershins headlines this show with Milwaukee’s Brief Candles. Brief Candles were down in C-U last year when they performed at the Highdive with headlining act Evil Tents, so they’re in familiar territory. Joining in is Terminus Victor, who released their new record earlier this year and is definitely worth checking out.
