The Overture: May 31 – June 6

WHAT: The Diamond Stretch, Bad Catman, Roberta Sparrow, the Fresh Kills, Panel Van

WHERE: The Highdive ($5)

WHEN: Tuesday, May 31st at 9:00 p.m.

As we covered last week, this show will be the first on a new stage at Highdive, aimed at smaller events and located on the opposite side of the bar from the main area. Musically, this is a who’s who of local punk, and would be a great primer for those not familiar with the scene.

WHAT: Burnoutbright, Living & Wrestling, Mammoths, Memory Map, Earthworm Brotherhood, Dino Bravo

WHERE: The Hub (free/$3 suggested donation)

WHEN: Thursday, June 2nd at 7:30 p.m.

After an inarguably successful first show back on May 5th, the Hub will host a second one featuring mostly heavy bands. With the exception of Earthworm Brotherhood (“local calculator duo”, sez Facebook), expect this one to bring the heavy. Toss in a donation, and make sure you’re there in time to see Peoria-based Mammoths, who lay claim to one of the best live shows in town.

WHAT: The Soundtrack of Our Lives, Common Loon

WHERE: The Highdive ($20 advance)

WHEN: Thursday, June 2nd at 9:00 p.m.

The Parasol Swedish connection has delivered big time this week, with psych-rockers the Soundtrack of Our Lives dropping by to play not one but two shows. Prior to the blowout at Highdive, the band will play an afternoon acoustic set at the Parasol store, beginning at 4:30. A ticket to the late show will get you in to the acoustic show for free (it’s also free to those under nineteen), and donations are welcome/encouraged if you don’t (or even if you do, and are feeling extra generous). For more, see Mark Laughlin’s excellent article.

WHAT: Bate Calado

WHERE: Iron Post ($TBA)

WHEN: Saturday, June 4th at 9:00 p.m.

So it turns out there’s a Brazilian music scene in town. Not that odd considering that U of I is here and all. If bossa nova or forro is your thing, this is where you want to be Friday night.
