The Overture: June 7 – 13

WHAT: Deathtram, Canyons of Static, Leonard Hatred

WHERE: Canopy Club ($7)

WHEN: Tuesday, June 7th at 6:30 p.m.

This is the second to last Leonard Hatred show before guitarist Brendan O’Connor ends his year abroad and returns to the University of Leeds — a real shame, since the groove-punk band just popped up on the scene this past December. On the plus side, they may or may not have copies of their debut album available at this show. Add in Deathtram’s uber-scuzzy garage rock and Canyons of Static’s highly affected post rock, and you’ve got the makings of a sweaty night in the Void Room.

WHAT: Second Annual Iron Post Jazz Fest with C-U Hard Bop Collective, Mik Templeton, Chip McNeill Quartet, Jay Sawyer Combo, Assaro/Kaye/Houchin, Ray Sasaki Sextet and Mike Fenoglio

WHERE: Iron Post ($TBA)

WHEN: Friday, June 9th – Saturday, June 11th

Talk about welcome surprises — while word just got out on this event recently, three days, seven shows and twenty-some musicians is impressive no matter when you find out about it. The Iron Post is about as locally owned as is possible, so you know your support matters on this one, big time.

WHAT: Cotton Jones, The Leadership, Common Loon

WHERE: Canopy Club ($7)

WHEN: Thursday, June 9th at 10:00 p.m.

While Michael Nau may be more familiar to people here as the frontman of regional touring staples Page France, he’s garnered significant steam with Cotton Jones as well, with writeups on NPR and performances across the country. For bonus points, see the first Common Loon show in a while.

WHAT: Hot Club of Cowtown

WHERE: IMC ($12 advance)

WHEN: Sunday, June 12th at 7:00 p.m.

While the Folk and Roots Festival may have moved to November, they continue to book excellent acts outside of that window. Sunday, Hot Club of Cowtown make a welcome return after a very well received set at last year’s festival. Bring the kids out — it’s free if they’re under twelve.
