The Overture: July 19 – 25

WHAT: Dr. Responsible, Abram Taber, Rusalka

WHERE: Red Herring (donations)

WHEN: Thursday, July 21st at 10:00 p.m.

Thursday night sees the Red Herring continuing its recent run of great shows, with two loop-based touring artists and local boys Rusalka. As the Herring appears to be testing out a new donation-based system, your support will be appreciated even more.

WHAT: Central Illinois Metalfest

WHERE: Canopy Club

WHEN: Friday, July 22nd – Sunday, July 24th

You probably know what to expect from this. There are some pretty sweet bands playing (Exhumed, Nachtmystium) and a fairly low amount of hilarious band names (I do really like Festerfuck, though).

WHAT: The Leadership, Grandkids, Middle Class Fashion

WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5)

WHEN: Friday, July 22nd at 9:00 p.m.

Coming off a two week tour, Grandkids will be rearing to show their hometown and  new tricks they’ve picked up. The Leadership and newish locals Middle Class Fashion support. And yes, I know it’s fucking 400 degrees out and the last thing you want to do is go to an outdoor show. Drink cold beer.

WHAT: Ken Draznik and Jim Wald (Vertebrats)

WHERE: WEFT Studios (FREE)

WHEN: Monday, July 25th at 10:00 p.m.

Let’s get one thing straight here: the local music scene as we currently know it would not exist if it weren’t for the Vertebrats. Their undeniably great songwriting put Champaign-Urbana on the college radio map, and their music has been covered by everyone from Uncle Tupelo to Courtney Love. On Monday, two of the group’s founding members will perform an acoustic set at WEFT. Tune in or drop by the studio to listen live.
