WHAT: Santah, Pet Lions, Pretty Little Empire, Sonny Stubble
WHERE: Canopy Club ($7)
WHEN: Thursday, September 15th at 8:00 p.m.
Santah are coming off a lengthy tour that has seen them swing out to Brooklyn and then down through Georgia, before cutting back up into good old Illinois. And hey! Pet Lions are playing too — they used to have that song on WPGU all the time, but most of the music on that station has apparently been pre-empted by ten year old Chevelle songs lately.. We know you’re probably trying to save some energy for Pygmalion, but Santah are promising beards. If Vivian can man up and grow one, this will be worth the seven dollars.
WHAT: J Phlip, Mertz
WHERE: Cowboy Monkey ($5)
WHEN: Thursday, September 15th at 10:00 p.m.
J Phlip is a name that you used to hear all the time around Champaign-Urbana — but then she up and moved to San Francisco and became an internationally known DJ. Inbetween a California residency and playing shows across Europe (including Ibiza and London’s Fabric), she’ll make a stop at the Monkey for a show that costs just five dollars. While it may not be as swanky as Spain, you can probably wear flip-flops to this if you really want to, and that matters more than you think.
WHAT: Sanctified Grumblers, Evil Tents, Dave King and Friends, Edward Burch
WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5)
WHEN: Friday, September 16th at 9:00 p.m.
Evil Tents will debut a full-band lineup at this C-U Folk and Roots sponsored show, fleshing out their skeletal tunes with bass and a second guitar. The other three groups will go in the opposite direction, with Edward Burch (longtime collaborator with the late Jay Bennett) and Dave King (Duke of Uke) opting for a more stripped down approach than their usual ensembles, and Sanctified Grumblers promising to play entirely unamplified. They also have a sousaphone, for whatever that’s worth.
WHAT: WEFT 30 Years on Air Celebration with Big Bluestem, the Palace Flophouse
WHERE: Mike ‘N Molly’s ($5)
WHEN: Saturday, September 17th at 2:00 p.m.
Hey, did you know WEFT has been on the air since 1981? That’s a pretty long time for any radio station, especially one that’s volunteer-run and community oriented. As an incredibly important piece of our local cultural puzzle, the very least that you can do is listen in to the live simulcast of this show.
