Kiwane Carrington’s father told city council members that he is not satisfied with the $470,000 wrongful-death settlement approved Tuesday night, and Mr. Carrington’s sister said she is “not taking it.”

“It is time for us to move on,” Chambers said. “It’s time for us now to build bridges instead of walls. We’ve got this facade up that we can throw money at a situation. A Band-aid will not cover a bullet hole.”

The Champaign County coroner’s office has identified a body found in a car near the town of Longview as that of a University of Illinois associate professor of Germanic studies who had been missing since Sept. 9.
Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup says an autopsy conducted Tuesday identified the body as that of 48-year-old Frederick Schwink of rural Longview.

This summer’s buyouts are saving the University of Illinois’ Urbana campus $1.4 million a month, trustees learned Thursday.
Four hundred twenty UI employees took advantage of voluntary separation offers. One hundred fifteen of them were tenured faculty and 17 were non-tenured faculty, according to UI President Michael Hogan.

Gov. Pat Quinn has reached a deal with a major union that could save Illinois state government between $50 million and $100 million while barring layoffs of most state employees, both sides said Monday.
Under the agreement, the state won’t cut jobs or close institutions until June 2012 if the union approves at least $50 million in cost-cutting measures, said Anders Lindall, Illinois spokesman for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
