Steel Magnolias was produced off-Broadway for two years before the famous movie came out and stole all its thunder. I enjoyed some moments in the film adaptation, but I didn’t care for the story at all. All the women were shrill clichés and all the men were douchebags. I have no idea if the play is better. But the few plays I’ve seen at Parkland Theatre have been fantastic, so I recommend checking this out.

Penn State at Illinois Football, 11 a.m., Memorial Stadium, good ticket deals still to be had
There are probably funny Penn State jokes still to be made at this point, but I can’t come up with any of them. Their depleted program isn’t very good at football this year, but then the Illini haven’t been world-beaters either, so who knows what sort of shitshow awaits. All I know is that LASAGNA is being served as I write this. (JG)

If you’ve been wondering what to do with all that hazardous shit in your basement, the Illinois EPA is giving you a chance to drop it off at 3202 Apollo Dr., off Olympian, in Champaign. Yeah, we know this may not be as fun as some (or any) of the other events this weekend, but someone’s gotta do the chores. Drop it off on the way to Pygmalion. (SK)

C-U Reading Kickoff, Champaign Public Library, 2:00–3:00 p.m., free
C-U Reading kicks off Sunday with the prolific writer and entertainer, Dr. Elliot Engel, at the Champaign Public Library. He’ll “bring to life America’s iconic humorist” (we hope not literally) to start this year’s reading of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Copies of the book are available at either library or via ebook on the library website. (SK)
