FRIDAY, JUNE 7
Sounds at Sunset, Robert C. Porter Family Park, 6:00–8:00 p.m.
The weather looks like it will be gorgeous on Friday, and this free event in the park sounds perfect. Abnormous is playing, so come out and start your weekend off right. (TN)
Mud, The Art Theater Co-op, times vary
The film I’m most looking forward to this weekend is Mud, from writer/director Jeff Nichols. The film has built a lot of buzz after its screenings at Sundance and Cannes this year. Matthew McConaughey continues his string of challenging and intriguing roles (look at the last two years) in this thriller. The story follows the pact between two boys and a fugitive (McConaughey) who is trying to reunite with his lover (Reese Witherspoon). Look for a full review on this one early next week. (JS)
Spring Breakers, The Art Theater Co-op, Midnight
Harmony Corrine’s epic sun-splashed weirdness, Spring Breakers, hits the Art Theater Co-op‘s classy screen this weekend. In a tale that merges theft, drugs, violence, nudity, blossoming tween pop stars, and the nut-covered confection that is James Franco, Spring Breakers will run Friday and Saturday this week, then come back next Thursday the 13th. Check out the trailer here, catch Chike’s review next week, and get down to the Art for some strange. (MG)
SATURDAY, JUNE 8
Hogchute Opry, Kalyx Center for Sustainability, Monticello, 4 p.m., $5
These are always a treat. The last time I was out at the Kalyx Center, it was for the previous Barnstormer featuring White Rabbits, Wildlife, Psychic Twin, and a bunch of others. This establishment is really something. This time, it’ll host the Hogchute Opry, featuring a handful of bands and a bunch of art and activities to go along with the music. Really awesome show. It features Morgan Horse, Catching Hickory, The Legend of Levi Morgan, Cody & The Gateway Drugs, and Neoga Blacksmith. Seriously awesome. (PS)
Summer Showcase & Hafla, Centennial Park, 5:00–8:00 p.m.
Shyama Anima is a belly dance duet who performs to “all things metal.” This Saturday they’re showcasing their new work by holding a hafla (party) in the Centennial Park pavilion.
You’re invited to bring a dish for the potluck, while enjoying the performance.
For more information, email Mandy. (TN)
Mud Stew: A Play Date for Kids & Their Adults, Homer Lake Forest Preserve, 1:00–3:00 p.m., free
Just to stick with the mud thing here… After you watch Mud, take your kids outside to enjoy some actual mud. Celebrate National Get Outdoors Day and the start of June’s “Leave No Child Inside Month.” Parents and caregivers are encouraged to bring their kids out to the Homer Lake Natural Playscape to catch bugs, build forts, dig holes, search for treasure, and concoct potions, mud pies, and mud stew. Bring some extra clothes. (JS)
Good Food for a Good Cause, Independent Media Center, 6:00–8:00 p.m., $15–$25 (sliding scale)
This event is a fundraiser for the IMC Justice Delegation. Twelve delegates are attending the Allied Media Conference, and need help with the funding. The Allied Media Conference is a “collaborative laboratory of media-based organizing strategies for transforming our world, held every Summer in Detroit.” The delegates from the IMC are leading a session on “organizing against the New Jim Crow,” as well working on decarceration.
Saturday’s event will include Spanish and Caribbean inspired dinner and music. Wine and raffle tickets will be available for an additional donation. (TN)
Montana Skies, Sleepy Creek Vineyards, 8:00 p.m.
Nothing like a glass of wine and some awesome music on a Saturday night. This Saturday at Sleepy Creek Vineyards, the guitar-cello-fusion group Montana Skies will perform. Per their website: “In concert, these award winning musicians delve into music from Pink Floyd and Rush to Vivaldi, and House of the Rising Sun, as well as their own originals that have been featured everywhere from NPR to the Travel Channel. Combining elements of classical technique, jazz improv and the power and energy of rock n’ roll; Jonathan’s guitar wizardry and Jenn’s blazing electric cello combine to create a sound that is truly remarkable. While the music defies simple categorization, it is a fusion in the truest sense of the word. It’s been called everything from chamber rock to psychedelic strings. Whatever you want to call it, rest assured, this ain’t your grannies chamber music.” (MG)
Withershins w/ Brief Candles + Terminus Victor, Mike N Molly’s, 8:00 p.m., 5 doll hairs
If you’re anything like me, you’re a person. And as persons, sometimes we have long, shitty weeks. And if you’re anything like me, you like to consume alcohol, socialize, and function as a social lifeform on the weekends. Now all you people just like me out there, you know that I LOVE gazing at my shoes, and I will probably glance at my shoes once or twice during this lineup by coincidence.
Brief Candles are a Milwaukee-based quartet who wear the shoegaze genre-badge proudly. If you’re anything like me, you’ve never seen them live before. But for me, the power-drill-esque guitar tones I’ve heard on their recordings are therapeutic enough to win me over. Terminus Victor is escaping the dark, dank urbana basement circuit for a night in the beergarden. And WITHERSHINS … I mean if you’re like me, you’re reading this right now and you don’t need me to explain Withershins to you, but they will sonically beat the shit out of you.
Being a person of modest means, all you people just like me are enticed by the very modest and attractive price of 5 dollars (if you’re anything like me at all, you’re a real funny guy who saw the ticket listed on the facebook event claiming 5 “DOLL HAIRS” the price, but these are travelin’ bands who buy lots of expensive gas so just bring American currency, you hilarious prankster).
